I'm doing it for a mixture of reasons:-
I think ethanol is much better fuel than petrol, because although it has lower energy density it's both oxygenated and much higher octane than pump petrol.
I've got an brain tumour and the American cancer society thinks air pollution from cars causes cancers and if we use less petrol our grand kids will have less chance of getting this and other types of tumour.
Ethanol is negative carbon footprint that means using it should reverse the effects of man-made climate change. The melting of the ice caps the more powerful weather events and the changing of the direction and power of the Gulf steam.
It doesn't take a college education or much training to make ethanol, after all before the Great war most American farmers had a still.
The oil companies have conned us they're selling fuel that causes cancer they know it, but like magicians they talk fast and and try their best to misdirect everyone’s attention from the few studies there have been.
I wouldn't have a problem with people who have invested in oil companies if they would want to now re-invest in greener and more ethical companies.
Lastly there is a slight nationalistic component in that for every gallon of domestically made fuel sold, all of the money stays in the country. I don’t think we should be exporting a good part of our gross national product to other countries, when we could be making ethanol here. Then no foreign power could hold us to ransom.
